La Liga side Atletico Madrid thrashed Celta Vigo 3-2 to remain in competition for the title.

The fourth placed outfit saw goals from Fernando Torres, Yannick Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann to seal the win.

“It was an intense match. We were able to rally because we are a team that always gives everything every single minute,” the match winner said after the game.

In the first half, both sides got a goal each. Celta scored first through Gustavo Cabral after the goalkeeper made an error. In-form striker Torres went acrobatic when he got his goal – one that would contend for goal of the year. Atletico could have doubled their tally but Torres lost his spot kick, joining Griemann and Kevin Gameiro who have lost theirs in recent games.

Diego Simeone’s men faced a tough and relentless opposition after the break. Sime Vrsaljko was called on after Juanfran picked up a hamstring injury.

Celta Vigo punished Atletico when John Guidetti scored 12 minutes from the end of the game after a breakaway.

Carrasco levelled proceedings in the 86th minute with a 25-yard volley before Griezmann got the winner in the 88th minute. Gameiro nodded the ball down for the France international for him to convert from close range.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Gamiero could have added another goal but he hit the framework from such a close range. The miss would compete for one of the greatest misses in football. Diana Ross miss at the 1994 World Cup, Daniel Agger miss when Liverpool played Fulham, Fernando Torres’ miss against Man United, Scott Sinclair miss for the Swans against United in 2011, and Park Ji Sung’s miss against Boro are all comparable to the chance Gameiro lost. Incredible.
